Show and Tell

"Show and Tell" develops new kinds of theater and performance styles for children and adults based on the method of creative philosophising. Show and Tell's theater productions enable children and adults to pursue answers to philosophical questions on equal footing. Show and Tell's productions try to use different ways of working with the space in theater and interactive formats to try to make direct contact with their audiences.

FRIEND SIMULATOR
A GamePlay about Friendship for ages 10+

Two friends, Lara and Steve, find themselves on the other side of the screen in the computer game FRIEND SIMULATOR. In order to beat the game and get home, they have to create the ultimate friendship. But what is friendship? Do friends always have to help each other? Am I still a good friend if I don’t invest as much in the friendship as my friend does? What is the important thing about friendship? The game becomes a race against time.

Lara and Steve solve riddles, sort thoughts, collect stories about friendship and create new avatars to make it through the game’s level in time.

FRIEND SIMULATOR is a documentary performance based on discussions and workshops about friendship and gaming with middle school classes from Gymnasium Dörpsweg, Max-Brauer-Schule and the Elbschule Educational Center for Hearing and Communication.

YELLOW AND PINK
Two wooden puppets, one of them pink, the other one painted yellow, wake up in the middle of a meadow and look at each other. They ask themselves: Who are we? And how did we get here? They begin to speculate about where they might have come from. They look closely at each other. They marvel at how anything so perfectly formed could come to be. Pink thinks, “Someone must have made us.” And Yellows claims, “I think we were created by coincidence.” This sparks an intelligent, lively argument that gets more and more ridiculous.

Julia Hart and her team transform William Steig’s story “Yellow and Pink” into a live philosophical debate that invites young audiences to figure out what they think and pick a side.

Yellow and Pink was award a grant from the Behörde für Kultur und Medien Hamburg and the Hamburgische Kulturstiftung.

THE HAMBURG CODE
Is death fair? Is everyone a tattletale? Is it good to eat ice cream every day? Why can’t I just watch Netflix all night? Six actors and children address these burning questions and pursue the answers together on stage. The audience takes a vote: Are there really rules for leading a “good” life? The Hamburg Code brings personal and fictional stories, ethical and philosophical dilemmas to life on stage based on discussions with fifth grade students from three middle schools in Hamburg.

Invited to the Children’s Theatre Festival 2019 at the Fundus Theater in Hamburg.

RABBIT HEART
A philosophical show about courage and fear (Age 9+)

Fear is one of our most basic feelings. In order to overcome fear, we need courage. Both feelings are part of us from the beginning of our lives and both feelings determine many of our actions. But how can we describe and explain such basic, yet complicated feelings? Is it possible to truly understand how fear originates? And how can we tell when we are being courageous?

Together with the children's philosopher Dr. Kristina Calvert, the ensemble of young performers: Lemi Baykurt, Elsa Doormann, Antonia Einsiedel, and Joana de Silva and professional actors: Katharina Schütz, Florian Weigel, and Johannes Nehlsen tried to get closer to these gigantic feelings over eight weeks of philosophical discussions about courage and fear.

During this time the children and the adults came face to face with real and imaginary fears.

Do we experience both kinds of fear the same way and how do we deal with them? Are there any aspects of courage and fear that both generations can relate to?

Do we get more courageous as life goes on or do our fears continue to grow as we get older?

Director Julia Hart made the initial selection of thoughts, statements and stories out of the ensemble's discussions. The ensemble and artistic team collaborated together to create the script for the performance. The ensemble searches for situations that get us scared and analyzes the what happens inside of us.

How are we confronted with courage and fear in our lives? And how do we talk about these feelings? Is it possible to learn something about these feelings from another generation?

Rabbit Heart is a show that combines short scenes, music, dance, and song as the ensemble playfully circles around these questions and tries out each other's thoughts on stage. The children speak texts from the adults and vice versa.

MARVELLING
Judith and Modi are 11 years old. In conversations with each other and with their grandparents about God, nature, and miracles, they tackle some of life's most important questions: Are vampires real? Is nothingness black or white? Where is the end of the world? Based on these conversations, actors Johannes Nehlsen and Iris Rufner take us on a journey of marvelling about the miracles in our world.

This project is funded by the Hamburg Endowment for the Arts.

FRIEND CONTROLLER
Friend Controller is broken! Everything is hissing and blinking. The graphics are completely messed up and parts of the game are entirely missing. If the game isn’t immediately repaired, the game will delete itself. The avatars Issy and Bobbi need your help! They know the game inside and out, but they don’t know much about friendship. What is friendship? And what does pizza have to do with anything?

Issy and Bobbi only have a little bit of time until everything is destroyed and they both disappear forever. Together with Issy and Bobbi you will solve puzzles, sort out thoughts and collect friendship symbols. Will you manage to repair the levels on time?

The text adventure game FRIEND CONTROLLER is inspired by the recent theater production FRIEND SIMULATOR from the theater collective “Show and Tell”. Both projects are based on the method of creatively philosophising about friendship with youth and are also based media awareness workshops about games. Students from the Max Brauer School, the Gymnasium Dörpsweg and the Elbschule Center for Education, Hearing and Communication in Hamburg participated in these workshops.

FRIEND CONTROLLER is in the German language and free of cost: www.friend-controller.de

Friend Controller was made possible with funds from Fonds Darstellende Künste aus Mitteln der Beauftragten der Bundesregierung für Kultur und Medien.
